A Short List of Phobias and Phobia Therapy That Works

Using a short list of phobias to analyze the general disorder itself makes it easier to deal with as there are hundreds of different fears to address. No list of phobias could possibly be comprehensive.Phobias are one of the most common kinds of anxiety disorders. They are fears surrounding a specific object or situation. This kind of fear is usually persistent and reoccurring. Although some would say phobias are irrational, to the person with the phobia symptoms, they are as real as the person himself.Here is a list of phobias in the three main clinical categories:1. Social phobias are a fear of involvement with people and social situations.2. Specific phobias where a certain trigger like heights, spiders, water, or flying can cause fear.3. Agoraphobia, which is literally a fear of open areas. This person fears leaving the comfort and familiarity of a home or other “safe” place.It is estimated that as much as 18% of the American population exhibits phobia symptoms. Reportedly, phobias are the second most common mental illness among men and the most common among woman.Phobias quite often interfere with daily life. Fortunately there is much that can be done.Phobia therapy and other forms of phobia help are available. Phobias don’t have to be lifelong burdens.For our small list of phobias there are four main categories of phobia therapy that can be helpful and effective1. Cognitive-behavioral therapy works well with certain phobias. You essentially dig into your specific thoughts and behaviors and work to overcome them. This is done in both group settings and one on one.2. Anti-anxiety drugs are not my favorite solution but they can help in severe cases. These drugs often work best with other types of phobia therapy.3. Virtual reality is a new type of phobia therapy that desensitizes the patient, immersing the patient in his fear until he fears no more. This can be a bit risky and also expensive so it isn’t as common as the others.4. My favorite has always been the natural way. I feel strongly that a person in optimal physical, emotional and spiritual condition can often fight off the most difficult of physical and mental disorders, including our list of phobias above.Whatever your opinion, you should engage in some form of phobia therapy or anxiety self help so that your phobias, fears and anxieties don’t stay with you for life.
